Unfolding: Botanical Ferns, A Watercolor Collection

Only spread a fern-frond over a man’s head and worldly cares are cast out, and freedom and beauty and peace come in.
— John Muir

Why Ferns

I love them. Plain and simple. I feel they are magical, mystical and are wise old souls…full of green life!

I completely adore springtime! I look forward to seeing crocuses pop up in bright colors against the faded brown grass of late winter. I enjoy the colorful song birds returning to the yard. But most of all, I love it when the ferns start to appear. It's fun to watch the tiny spirals unfurling in a wonderful woodsy scent, with their fronds stretching into a lush green display. They signal that warm weather is upon us.

Ferns first appeared 360 million years ago according to fossil records. These ancient plants reproduce via spores without seeds and flowers. They are classified as vascular plants starting out as coiled fiddleheads and unfurl their complex fronds early spring.

Collection Details

This series of watercolor paintings shows how captivated I am by the fern's organic shapes, woodsy scents and varying shades of greens and yellows. I wanted to capture their unique personality of energy and light through loose brushwork with a smattering of graphite and neocolor II water-soluble wax pastel.

This series was created on a variety of 100% cotton, high-quality archival watercolor papers. The sizes range from 7"x10" to 9"x12" and ship unframed in 1-2 weeks.
