100-day Project

Top 5 takeaways...

Collage...100 finished 5"x5" squares taking up residence in 3 medium-sized notebooks. It began February 22nd–June 4th. I explored a variety of mediums – ink, soft pastel, hand-painted cheesecloth, dried acrylic paint peels, monotypes and many pieces of prepared gelli plate printed papers.

The process of creating collage brought playtime back in to my process.

MONOTYPES – Soft Pastel
DAY 37: This was my favorite of the 100 collages (pictured above, middle row, third from left). First, I created the soft pastel painting on paper, then transferred it to the gelli plate and secured the surface with a layer of paint. This layer fixed the issue of smudging typical of soft pastels! I enjoyed this process so much, that I'm considering a series of these minis.

INK DRAWINGS
DAY 33: Drawing with a brush on brown paper has such a different feel. The fibers of the paper catches and then results in splatters, spurts, and splotches in uneven strokes. Losing control of the ink on paper was an unexpected and interesting surprise.

ALL WHITE
DAY 26: Taking color out of the equation was a good challenge. There are so many shades of white to work with – warm whites, cool whites and all the shades in between. Just visit your local paint store, where choosing the 'perfect white' for your walls becomes quite the decision-making process. Using textural white surfaces was the answer in composing the composition.

POSCA PENS!
DAY 38: What a fun, colorful way to let loose and draw, make marks, polka dots, smear and smudge! These acrylic paint pens are a must in any artist's toolbox and so glad I tried them.

PAINTED PAPERS – Gel Printing
DAY 1-100! If you haven't tried gel printing, then you are in for a real treat. It's an addiction, if I'm being honest. The gel plate I used was 9"x12" and I also used a few 3" mini versions for creating the soft pastel pieces (days 29, 30, 37, 100). I used deli papers, sumi papers, copy papers, bristol board and cheese cloth with an array of acrylic paints and inks.

This collection was created in 3 different 5.5"x8.5" notebooks.
